Connecticut Women Basketball vs Hartford Hawks December 29, 2007

Photographs of the game

The Connecticut Women's Basketball team took care of business Saturday night at the XL (Hartford) Civic Center handing Jen Rizzotti and her Hartford Hawks a 70-24 beatdown. It didn't start that way. The Hawks scored on their first 2 possessions to take a 5-0 lead. It was downhill from there. The Huskies simply would not let the Hawks score, holding them without a basket at one point for almost 17 minutes. Hartford made only 13 percent of their shots. Hartford's 24 points were the fewest in its history. And the Hawks scored only seven in the second half. It was also the 1st time the Hawks played a #1 ranked team - something the Huskies regained in this week's polls. Game notes: The Huskies were led by freshman Maya Moore who had 21 points to go with seven rebounds). Swanier also had a strong game and some athletic moves driving in the paint. "I just feel that I need to step up in general to help the team," Swanier said. "If that means take more shots, that's fine." The one negative to come out of this game was Brittany Hunter's aggravating her right knee again. UConn scored 35 of the last 44 first-half points, holding Hartford without a field goal in the final 9:47. Hartford failed to score from the field in the first 7:02 of the second half as well. In almost 17 minutes, the Hawks missed 23 consecutive shots. Senior guard Jamie McCabe led the Hawks with nine points. This was UConn's first game as a No. 1 team since losing to Villanova on Feb. 28, 2004.
